Lake Conroe supports a diverse ecosystem of fish species, crucial for both recreational fishing and ecological balance:
Prey species: The primary prey fish in Lake Conroe include Bluegill, Gizzard Shad, Longear Sunfish, and Threadfin Shad.
Catfish: Among anglers, catfish are highly sought after. Channel Catfish are the most abundant species in the lake, though Blue Catfish also contribute significantly to the fishery.
Temperate basses: White Bass and Hybrid Striped Bass are present in Lake Conroe. Angling efforts targeting these species remained consistent between the 2021-2022 and 2016-2017 creel surveys.
Largemouth bass: Largemouth Bass are the most popular species for anglers on Lake Conroe, offering high-quality fishing opportunities. The lake's record Largemouth Bass, caught in January 2009, weighed 15.93 pounds and measured 27 inches. Notably, this fish was one of four entered into the Toyota ShareLunker Program during the 2008-2009 season. Since then, three more individuals weighing 13 pounds or more have been submitted: one each in 2015, 2019, and 2021.
Crappies: Both Black Crappie and White Crappie provide additional angling opportunities at Lake Conroe, with increased fishing activity noted in the 2021-2022 creel survey compared to the previous survey in 2016-2017.
